Caravan Towing FAQs: Things To Know Before You Tow

Caravan towing can feel daunting, whether you’re new to the world of caravanning or even if you’re an experienced tourer upgrading to a larger model. Questions about weight limits, driving licences and insurance are some of the most common topics our customers ask us about.

To help answer all of your questions, we spoke with Ollie, one of our fantastic Sales Executives here at Webbs Caravans and asked him to answer the most frequently asked questions we receive about towing a caravan.

How Do I Tow a Caravan?

Learning how to tow a caravan takes many miles of practice and experience. If you are feeling unsure in any way we would recommend taking some lessons with a professional towing instructor or a trusted family member or friend to gain vital experience.

What Caravan Can I Tow?

This all depends on what tow-car you have. As a responsible company we check every car and caravan sold to ensure it’s a safe & legal match.

Checking what your car can tow on a reputable tow match service (we use Towmatch) to find out the Kerbweight and Maximum Tow and using the smallest weight as your maximum caravan weight is good practice.

Do I Need a Towing Licence To Tow a Caravan?

As of recently the law changed, so you can now tow any caravan of a maximum weight of 3500kgs with any car. Any more than this you will require a further licence – but since no caravan is above 2250kgs you will be fine on a standard B licence towing a caravan.

Head over to our blog all about caravan licences for a quick overview of everything you need to know.

What’s The Speed Limit For a Car Towing a Caravan?

On single carriageways (including overtaking lanes) the speed limit is 50mph, and on motorways and dual carriageways the speed limit is 60mph unless this is specified lower on the road. For all lower speed limits, abide by the signs as you usually would in a car.

Can I Tow a Caravan With an Electric Car?

Towing with an electric car is definitely possible! Albeit check on the maximum weight as some electric cars have a very small maximum towing weight. Electric cars make great stable towing vehicles due to their large kerbweight.

Do I Need to Update My Insurance to Tow a Caravan?

Yes – it’s always good to inform your insurance company that you’re towing and if your towbar is not factory fitted, it’s worth letting them know that you have retrofitted one.

Although not legally required, caravan insurance is a worthwhile investment so is definitely worth considering. Caravan insurance will cover for towing, fire and theft of your caravan, which will protect your investment significantly. As a company we are partner dealers with Caravan Guard and Safeguard insurance companies. We would be more than happy to guide you through the available options to help ensure your caravan is protected from the moment you take ownership.

We hope that you’re feeling more confident about towing your caravan, and that we’ve answered all of your questions! If there’s still anything you’re unsure about, our team is always happy to offer tips and general advice on all things caravanning – just get in touch.
