Motorhome Licences: What You Actually Need

If you’re new to the world of motorhomes, understanding what licence you need can feel confusing. The good news is, it’s simpler than you might think!

There are two main factors:

  1. When you passed your driving test

  2. The motorhome’s MAM (maximum authorised mass) which includes the vehicle’s weight plus the maximum load it can carry

Can I Drive a Motorhome With a Car Licence?

Yes you can – but this does depend on the size of your motorhome and when you got your licence.

If the MAM is below 3.5 tonnes, then you can drive a motorhome with a regular driving licence in the UK. If the motorhome is above 3.5 tonnes you’ll need an additional licence.

What Licence Do You Need To Drive a Motorhome?

If you passed your test after January 1, 1997, your standard category B licence covers you to drive a motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes.

If you passed your test before January 1, 1997, you’re in luck! You can drive a motorhome up to 7.5 tonnes. That’s because licences issued around that time automatically included a C1 entitlement – so you can drive larger vehicles without needing an extra licence.

What Licence Do I Need To Drive a Bigger Motorhome?

Is the motorhome between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes? You’ll need a category C1 licence.

Over 7.5 tonnes? That’s when a category C licence comes into play.

Think of it like stepping up as your motorhome gets heavier.
